Slide Background
Farm Opharn Support Trust

The overall intention of the FOST programme is to proactively increase the capacities of the farming communities to respond to the orphan crisis and is based on the belief that orphaned children have the best opportunity for development within a family group, without sibling separation, in an environment that is familiar and where they have the opportunity to learn their culture first hand.

Self Help Groups

Self Help Groups (income, savings and lendings) project/Mukando is that it creates a community bank which individuals can access for borrowing as well as save their money. The women in these groups have gone further to accumulate household items which are shared after 6months or 1year depending on what the group has agreed. FOST has created these spaces for women as an enabling environment to ensure food security for the families as well as access to education for children through the savings and loans.

Providing educational support to orphans

Education support is one of the mechanisms that promotes the retention of children within schools as opposed to early marriages or child labour. FOST implements household
economic strengthening interventions and coping strategies that

resilience to achieve personal and
social well-being; enabling children
to experience love, protection, and
support that allows them to have a
sense of self-worth and have the
ability to realise their full potential.

such as Income Savings and Loans
(ISALs) enhances resource poor
households to increase their
disposable incomes. This initiative
promotes sustainability and
effective coping strategies to meet

YOUTH CAPACITY BUILDING

FOST provides Life Skills and Vocational Skills training
to build the self-reliance, assertiveness and empowerment of young people to make informed decisions on
their lives and positively influence the behaviour of their
peers. FOST also supports safe child-led advocacy using
Digital Story Telling, an approach that is interactive and
engaging. Young children are trained to make films
about their personal stories, either positive or negative,
and show how these experiences have affected and
influenced their lives. The films have been used as an
advocacy tool to create dialogue and awareness on
issues that affect children in communities and in other
forums.

See the world with those you love

Low input gardening is one way that FOST has adopted as an intervention to respond to nutritional needs for children and their families, as well as their communities at large. Low input gardening is a sustainable measure that aims at adapting to climatic change through promoting the reduction of carbon emissions, diversifying crops which are heat resistant and improving soil health.
